Major Industry Breakthrough

Parts Center to cut off supply to illegal gas workers.  As a result of CORGI’s ongoing work with manufacturers and merchants to make it harder for illegal gas workers to operate, the first national product distributor has announced that it will sell gas products only to CORGI registered installers.  From January 2008, Parts Center, the UK and Europe’s biggest spare parts supplier, will no longer sell “gas carrying parts” to those customers who aren’t CORGI registered.

Panorama branded irresponsible - BBC Programme ignores gas safety advice

The mother of two children who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a hotel in Corfu last year said that she holds tour operator Thomas Cook “totally and utterly responsible”.

Sharon Wood, the children’s mother told the BBC’s Panorama programme, screened in April that she thought Thomas Cook should have ensured the bungalow was safe. The programme recommended that concerned holiday-makers take a black spot detector to use abroad.  A number of concerned organisations, including CORGI, warned the BBC not to air the advice, explaining that such a recommendation would provide a false sense of comfort because the device – a patch which changes colour with the presence of carbon monoxide did not contain an alarm. Unfortunately the BBC still chose to issue the advice that has been called “irresponsible”.  Chris Bielby, Head of Safety for British Gas and chair of the Gas Industry Safety Group, said that the “advice flies in the face of that given across the gas industry on carbon monoxide safety”.

Oxford
High-Flyer killed by faulty heater

A former President of the Oxford Union died whilst on a gap year, an inquest heard.

Edward Tomlinson had left university and had been keen to broaden his horizons by studying in Beirut. But the 24-year-old’s life was cut short as he slept because of a faulty gas heater.

The inquest found that the water heater in his room has been faulty. Tests revealed that the levels of carbon monoxide in his blood were up to 25 times those of a normal, healthy man.

The hostel owner had given conflicting statements about when the boiler was installed, the inquest heard.

NASCAR racing drivers poisoned by fumes

The NASCAR racing series has recently had problems with some of their drivers being exposed to carbon monoxide fumes inside their cars.

Several drivers recently finished racing with a "carbon monoxidey feeling," some after their exhaust systems failed during the race, Nextel Cup director John Darby said.

Brian Vickers suffered second degree burns to his feet, and needed oxygen after Sunday's race because of his exposure to the carbon monoxide.

Jail for boiler death handyman

A Handyman from Hackney, who fitted a faulty boiler that killed the two sons and a mother of a close family friend, has been jailed for 20 months

Customer case studies

In order to highlight the importance of having your appliances regularly serviced by a CORGI registered engineer and to have a carbon monoxide detector fitted we have listed below some case studies that we have actually witnessed.

Mr and Mrs S from Redbourn had a lucky escape when their chimney was fitted with a cowl.  Before being fitted it wasn’t checked to see if it was clear.  It was discovered that prior to being fitted*Jackdaws had filled the chimney with twigs. Fortunately the carbon monoxide detector went off raising the alarm.
*Jackdaws are renowned for nesting in holes in trees or buildings.

Mr and Mrs E from Hertfordshire were feeling tired in the evening and just put it down to their busy lives.  However their carbon monoxide detector alerted them to the fact that they were slowly being  poisoned by high levels of carbon monoxide.  This boiler was serviced annually, but debris had detached from the chimney, blocking the flue pipe.

What's in a name?

It all started with four wheels….

We were looking for a vehicle that fitted our image and one that could cope with most situations.  We narrowed it down to the Land Rover Defender 90. It ticked all the right boxes.  If it’s strength and reliability were good enough for the British Army then it was going to more than fulfil our requirements.

We found our ideal car -  the number plate began with K25….It seemed to be telling us something!  We decided within hours of purchasing the car that our business would be called K25.

We then set about designing our logo with a local artist, and the pieces of the jigsaw began to slot into place.

Fortunately, the domain name www.k25.co.uk was still available.  And with our trusty website designers at www.design-nirvana.co.uk, set about securing the domain name and designing the website that you see now.

K25 was born!
